We understand that having an emergency eye problem is likely to be accompanied by feelings of stress, fear, and uncertainty. That’s why we offer emergency eyecare in practice, so you can see one of our experienced optometrists right away for your peace of mind.
We’re proud to be part of NI PEARS (Northern Ireland Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service). This service is intended for patients who are registered with a GP in Northern Ireland, and develop sudden problems, to ensure they get the help they need as soon as possible.
So, what exactly constitutes an eye emergency? Here are some examples:
Pain and/or discomfort in the eyes, or around the eye area
Sudden drop in vision in one or both eyes
Recent onset or sudden increase of flashes and/or floaters in one or both eyes
Suspected foreign body in the eye
If you are subject to any of the above signs or symptoms, you can make an appointment that will take place during normal working hours and are guaranteed to be seen at our practice in Newry or Banbridge within 48 hours.
During your emergency eyecare assessment, we’ll start by discussing your eye problem with you and go over any symptoms. You’ll also be able to tell us about any related medical history or history of eye problems. We’ll then carry out a thorough eye assessment to get to the root of the problem.
Once this is done, we’ll explain our findings and recommend the most appropriate treatment or advice for you, refer you to your GP if the issue is related to your general health, or refer you immediately to your local hospital eye department if the condition is more serious.
For minor conditions that are not sight threatening, we will usually be able to provide treatment in practice or recommend eye medication that we will provide a prescription for and send direct to your pharmacist for you to pick up or provide a form for you to take to your GP so you can have a prescription issued.
If necessary, we may recommend a follow-up appointment to make sure your eyes are no longer experiencing any problems.
Please do contact us as soon as you start experiencing any of the above symptoms and we’ll book you in for an emergency appointment as soon as possible.
